Firefighters Use Military Backgrounds to Keep Surrey Safe

Did you know that Britain’s Fire and Rescue Service employs a large number of former service people and Reservists?

Or that it is now on call for medical emergencies when an ambulance can’t get there?

In Surrey, a quarter of the crew have a forces background, and they’re trained along military lines.

Guildford station's Green Watch (the stations are divided into teams called watches) has an even heavier military presence, with half of the team being either veterans or serving Reservists.

Surrey County Council received an MoD Employer Recognition Scheme Gold Award for its commitment to employing and working with people with forces backgrounds.

We spent the day with Green Watch, to find out how military training helps with a career in the fire service.
