Nato soldiers master mountain warfare in Slovenia

Watch: What does it take to become a Nato mountain warfare specialist?

Soldiers from Nato member countries including the UK, Italy, Croatia and Poland have been undergoing intensive training in the rugged terrain of Slovenia to transform them into mountain warfare specialists.

Mountains cover 25% of the world's landmass, harbouring critical infrastructure and resources such as dams, power lines, pipelines, tunnels and main roads.

Whoever manages to control these areas would have a decisive advantage in a wartime environment.

Navigating mountainous terrain presents a formidable challenge, but with the proper training former no-go areas can be exploited for tactical or strategic gains.
