Extra British troops to reinforce Polish border with Belarus

More British troops will be deployed to Poland’s border with Belarus in order to address the migrant crisis in the area.

Thousands of migrants, mainly from the Middle East, have sought to cross into the European Union at the border between Poland and Belarus in recent weeks.

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has accused the UK and allies of engineering the crisis.

Western governments have accused Mr Lukashenko, a close ally of Russian President Vladamir Putin, of deliberately encouraging the migrants to breach its borders in retaliation for EU sanctions.

The UK already has a "small team" of engineers deployed to the Poland-Belarus border.

It comes as the UK signed a new defence deal with Ukraine amid amid concerns over rising tensions with Russia.
