The UK Armed Forces have helped tackle a record number of wildfires in Cyprus so far this summer as temperatures continue to soar on the Mediterranean island.

Defence Fire and Rescue (DFR) firefighters have already been called to 13 major blazes working alongside Republic of Cyprus land and aerial assets.

The combination of flammable vegetation and the island’s strong winds means Cyprus suffers greatly from wildfires.

The number so far this summer is well above the seasonal average, with record temperatures reaching above 40°C as early as June following a dry winter.

Since the first major callout to a forest fire between Vasa and Asgata villages on 25 April, Defence Fire and Rescue and RAF Akrotiri's 84 Squadron have worked side-by-side with Republic of Cyprus firefighters almost weekly.

Tackling fires on difficult terrain and at times, in heavy winds, makes the situation even more dangerous.

This season, the largest fire so far has been in Paphos, between Psathi and Polemi.

Reflecting on the recent surge of wildfires, Cyprus' Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment Maria Panagiotou highlighted the collaboration between the Cypriot firefighting services and DFR.

She said: "The contribution of British aerial assets is much appreciated, and our cooperation is excellent.

"It is crucial for us to work together, combining our knowledge, resources and strategies to ensure a comprehensive and coordinated effort."

With temperatures now expected to remain in the 30s and 40s for the next few months, the public are advised to take extra precautions to prevent fires - nearly 9 out of 10 fires are caused by human activities.

It is recommended to avoid open flames like campfires, bonfires, or fireworks and to dispose of cigarette butts correctly as the small sparks can quickly ignite dry vegetation.
