It's a case of FIBUA with the French as the Royal Welsh play opposing force in Estonia

Soldiers from the Royal Welsh joined forces with a French combined arms tactical sub-group (SGTIA) for Exercise Bold Dragon at the Central Training Area (CTA) in Tapa, Estonia.

The five-day exercise involved combat drills, tactics, and fighting in built up areas (FIBUA), to develop interoperability and full integration of the multinational battlegroup. 

The British troops are in Eastern Europe as part of Operation Cabrit, the UK's contribution to Nato's Forward Land Forces in Estonia and Poland.

The French troops were using the 416F assault rifle – their own variant of the Heckler & Koch HK416 – while the British soldiers were firing their SA80 L85A3s and the 7.62mm General Purpose Machine Gun, commonly known as the Gimpy.

Both sides have similar uniforms – the French were wearing the new Bariolage Multi‑Environnement Pattern and the British troops their standard Multi Terrain Pattern combat uniform.

To avoid any confusion, the Brits wore bush hats while the French were wearing helmets – which must have pleased the Royal Welsh soldiers in the summer heat of Tapa!
