The RAF Global Enablement Medical Force has been awarded the prestigious Firmin Sword of Peace for its outstanding humanitarian work in 2023.

The accolade, which celebrates exceptional efforts in fostering positive relationships between the British Armed Forces and communities worldwide, was presented at RAF Brize Norton by the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal Sir Rich Knighton.

The Medical Force was honoured for its remarkable achievements on operations during 2023, including deployments to Turkey after the devastating earthquake under Operation Greenlighter and delivering critical medical care in Sudan during Operation Polarbear.

Operating under challenging conditions, the force provided life-saving support to thousands.

"It's an honour to present RAF Global Enablement's Medical Force with the 2023 Firmin Sword of Peace for their dedication, resilience, and professionalism," ACM Sir Rich said.

"The commitment shown by our regular and reservist personnel represents the very spirit of service and excellence that the RAF stands for."

Beyond their global contributions, personnel from the Tactical Medical Wing have also made an impact closer to home.

Collaborating with the South-Central Ambulance Service, they formed a co-responder team, aiding local communities while maintaining their clinical skills.

Group Captain Rowley, Commander of the Medical Force, expressed pride in the team's accomplishments.

"This award reflects the patient-centred dedication, professionalism, and compassion of every member of the Medical Force.

"This award truly belongs to the entire Medical Force, and I couldn't be prouder of what we've achieved together."

The Firmin Sword of Peace, originally established as the Wilkinson Sword of Peace in 1966, is awarded annually to the UK Armed Forces unit judged to have made the most valuable contribution to building good relations with communities, either domestically or overseas.

The RAF Global Enablement Medical Force's recognition reinforces its vital role in providing support not just to global operations, but also to those in need closer to home.
