"Cameron Gave Assurance Defence Spending Would Increase This Year"
The Prime Minister gave a “personal assurance” to service chiefs in 2010 that Britain’s defence spending would increase from this year, a former adviser to then Defence Secretary Liam Fox has claimed.
A claim backed up by a former head of the Army who said there was “an undertaking” from the Prime Minister to increase spending.
Defence Secretary Michael Fallon, meanwhile, has insisted Britain's military strength is based on capabilities that few countries outside the US can match.
During a speech in Washington, Mr. Fallon said Britain, like the US, was urging Europe to spend more on defence, but he didn't say whether the Conservatives would commit to the two per cent of GDP target beyond 2016.
