Europe's Largest Airborne Exercise Since Cold War Underway

The biggest airborne exercise in Europe since the Cold War is underway.

It involves 4,800 troops from 11 countries and is taking place in Germany, Romania, Bulgaria and Italy.

Over 1,000 NATO paratroopers jumped from aircraft above the US training area of Hohenfels, Germany, as part of Exercise Swift Responsewhich will run until September 13. A US Army spokesperson told AFP:

"The paratroopers are now conducting follow-on operations in Hohenfels that focus on crisis response and building a cohesive NATO team of European high-readiness forces."

It comes amid a push by NATO to boost its defences in light of the Ukraine crisis.

The alliance warned last week that Moscow has a 'special responsibility' to help restore peace to the region, expressing its "serious concern about the recent sharp escalation of violence."
