£300m Submarine Shipyard Redevelopment Underway

Work is underway on the first phase of a £300m investment in BAE Systems' submarine shipyard in Barrow.

The eight-year redevelopment is being funded by the Ministry of Defence.

It'll pave the way for the Successor submarine project, which is due to replace the Vanguard fleet.

Construction has now begun on a new £23 million storage unit, which will house the site's submarine parts.

Defence minister Philip Dunne said it was an "important step", adding that it will secure thousands of jobs.

BAE expects to start building the first Successor submarine in September next year.
