The AV-8B Harrier II or Harrier GR.5 (English designation) is the second generation of the Hawker Siddeley Harrier. Its development was initiated in the late 1970s by the United States, soon joined by the United Kingdom who had designed the initial version.

The US Navy launched the Boeing X-32 program in the early 1990s to replace it, but the Pentagon decided to abandon it in favour of developing a multirole combat aircraft, the F-35 Lightning II.
