UK to Contribute 1,000 Troops to NATO Joint Task Force

Britain is set to contribute 1,000 troops as the lead nation in NATO's Very High Readiness Joint Task Force.

It’s the so-called “Spearhead” force, first discussed at the Wales summit last year.

From 2017, it will be the military alliance’s first response in the face of aggression.

The British troops will operate from two regional headquarters in Poland and Bulgaria and smaller units in the Baltic and Rumania.

It’s also been announced that the RAF will deploy four Typhoon aircraft to take part in the Baltic air policing mission.

The Typhoons will work alongside Norwegian jets between May and August this year in a deployment similar to that which took place in Lithuania in 2014.

The mission will see them respond to airspace incursions across the Baltic countries.
