US Defense Secretary: Europe Needs To Raise Military Spending

The US Defense Secretary says Europe should be spending more on defence, given the security challenges facing the region.

Ash Carter stressed that falling investment had eroded the continent's ability to be a capable American ally.

His comments come as political arguments on defence, ahead of the general election, focus on the two per cent spending target of GDP set by NATO.

The Defense Secretary is quoted as saying by Reuters:

"They're not doing enough. They are spending a smaller share of their GDP than they have in the past, [than] we do now and [than] many [other countries], like Russia, are spending. It's too low."

"It has to have the military power to be a capable ally of ours and we see that slipping," he continued. "That's got to turn around."
