US Warplanes Join Effort to Retake Tikrit From IS
American warplanes have, for the first time, taken part in the offensive to seize control of the Iraqi city of Tikrit back from Islamic State.
US officials say the airstrikes were carried out in response to a request from the Iraqi government.
The attacks were aimed at destroying IS strongholds, including a compound and a bridge controlled by the group.
The coalition strikes have killed thousands of IS fighters, destroyed nearly 1,500 vehicles and more than 100 artillery and mortar positions.
It comes as the RAF launched more airstrikes against IS targets in Mosul in Iraq.
In last week's latest operation Tornado G4 aircraft helped Kurdish forces advancing north-east of Mosul by attacking IS heavy machine guns and weapon positions with Paveway laser-guided bombs.
