Tri-Service
The Veterans Overcoming PTSD Through Meditation
Understanding of post traumatic stress disorder and the mental health problems veterans can experience has increased in recent years. But former servicemen can struggle with conventional therapies.
Keith McKenzie is a veteran of the Army and the Fire Service. He's also a Buddhist chaplain and runs a drop in centre in Edinburgh called the Veterans Cafe.
He knows first hand how learning to calm your mind can help with everything from post traumatic stress disorder, to agoraphobia or sleep disturbance.
These retreats are part of a much larger sacred place, tucked away in the heart of the Scottish borders. However, it's not all about religion.
Samye Ling was the first Tibetan Buddhist centre to be built in the West. It's Buddhist temple offers teaching and instruction. But this place is also a centre for mindfulness and meditation which has been opened up to the wider community.
As much as these retreats are about self-reflection, they're also helping these veterans to re-engage with those around them. Finding ways to look ahead and move forward.
