Army triathlete Captain Kat Matthews has finished on the podium at the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championships in Finland.

She finished in second behind Taylor Knibb as the American won by just four minutes overall.

This continues Cpt Matthews' return to form ahead of the IRONMAN World Championships in Hawaii in October - a tournament that the reigning Army Sportswoman of the Year has told Forces News she is aiming to win.

The Army physio targeted success at the 2022 World Championships, but a severe bike accident left her hospitalised and injured in the build up.

After a long period of rehabilitation, Cpt Matthews is back aiming for wins and is pleased with her second place in Finland.

"Happy, proud and better still, already inspired for the next part," she posted on Instagram after the race.

"Lahti, you are excellent. Great camaraderie today and incredible WPRO field. I dreamt it was possible to have a performance I was properly proud of again and today I earned that."

Watch below the moment Cpt Matthews receives her silver medal in Finland and stands on the podium.
