Laurence McCormick makes three saves in penalty shoot-out as UKAF beat Germans

The UK Armed Forces men's football team beat the German Bundeswehr on penalties in their Remembrance fixture.

Michael Campbell's early goal was cancelled out by Germany's Lucas Meyer as the 90 minutes ended in a 1-1 draw, but a thrilling shoot-out went UKAF's way.

Royal Navy shot-stopper Laurence McCormick was the hero for the hosts as he saved three penalties before the Army's Jack Barber stepped up to slot away the winning kick.

UKAF came into the game after a disappointing Kentish Cup which saw France take the trophy, as well as knowing they'd failed to score against the Germans in a 1-0 loss last year and a 0-0 draw in 2023.

Any nervousness around that was put to bed quite quickly though, as Josh Randall stood a cross up from the left and Aaron Eyett's nod across goal was turned in by skipper Michael Campbell.

UKAF had chances in the first half to further their lead but Sam Dawson's free kick curled over the ball and Randall was denied by a good save from German goalkeeper Andre Zott.

The second half saw a change in formation from the visitors and they went on to dominate the tempo of the game.

Their goal, which was a well-worked move finished by Lucas Meyer, was a reward for a better showing and the 1-1 draw was a fair reflection.

Penalties decided a winner and after four perfect efforts, spectators witnessed a flurry of missed or saved penalties.

McCormick's three during the shoot-out set UKAF up to win and Barber, who is new to the UKAF level in 2025, showed no signs of tension as he slotted away to give UKAF a Remembrance victory.
