An RAF star's chances of winning the Hockey World Cup are over after England were knocked out by Germany in the quarter-finals.

Senior Aircraftman Liam Sanford had made cameo appearances as England finished the group stage unbeaten and were leading 2-0 against the Germans with only minutes to go.

However, a dramatic comeback saw the game end 2-2 with Germany winning the shoot-out to knock Sanford and England out of the competition.

England have never won the event but this is the first time in four tournaments that they failed to reach the semi final stage.

In 2018, Sanford and England were knocked out by Belgium who went on to win the trophy.

Germany's two goals were the only two goals that England conceded during the competition.
