A Royal Navy petty officer has broken a world record at the British Rowing Indoor Championship.
Petty Officer Sean Gaffney was racing in the Adaptive PR3 division on Saturday and his 2km time of 06:28.3 has breezed past Laurent Viala’s previous record of 6:43.7.
The rower has had to battle difficult circumstances to get to the top after losing his foot in 1999 following a training accident. His hard work has resulted in a world record to cap off an impressive sporting year.
Gaffney represented Wales at the Commonwealth Games as a powerlifter in April while last year, he took home the title of British Indoor Rowing Champion. At the Invictus Games in 2016, he also won a gold medal for bench press.
Social media plaudits started to pour in after Gaffney’srecord-breakingg row.
In Saturday’s indoor rowing race, he finished nearly 16 seconds before any of his competitors to take home the win.
At the end of the eventful day, he took to Instagram to discuss the performance.
