The sea-skimming 526kg harpoon missile explained
The Harpoon is an all-weather, over-the-horizon, anti-ship missile.
It was first developed by the US Navy in 1977.
A single missile measures 4.5m in length and weighs 526kg.
The Harpoon's range reaches 77 miles on low-level, sea-skimming cruise trajectory and it has a turbojet engine with solid propellant booster.
The Harpoon is guided by a GPS-aided inertial navigation and armed with a 500lb blast warhead.
As of 2022, Harpoon missiles are in use with more than 30 military forces around the globe.
