Call the Midwife

Combining nostalgia, sentiment and the gritty reality of life for many a half century ago, Call the Midwife makes a welcome return to BBC One on Sunday, 21st January.

It's 1963 and Britain is in the grip of its worst winter for 300 years. But the times they are a changing with a new midwife from Jamaica due to boost diminished numbers at Nonnatus House - if she hasn't gone  AWOL in the snow and ice.

Meanwhile, there's plenty of life and death drama for the rest of the team to get to grips with, including the heartbreaking story of a dignified Jewish woman dying in her condemned house and a young stripper forced to leave her seedy nightclub when her pregnancy can no longer be kept secret...
