Boris Johnson has said the respect for those who fought strengthens the UK's determination to support Ukraine today.

The Prime Minister took the opportunity to show support to Ukraine during a VE Day address – directing attention toward the Ukrainians' "struggle" and sacrifices made.

On "this VE Day, as we remember those who sacrificed their lives for our freedom, we also think of those now suffering in Russia's illegal invasion of Ukraine", he said.

The Ministry of Defence (MOD) stressed that it is more important than ever to remember the sacrifices made to protect freedom and deter aggression.

In a statement, Defence Secretary Ben Wallace drew attention to the ongoing "war" in Ukraine imploring the "courage and determination of those who cherish freedom must prevail".

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has released a black and white video in front of destroyed residential buildings addressing the horrors being seen in Ukraine, likening them to Nazi "atrocities".
