In pictures: Up close with the US Navy's gigantic USS Gerald R Ford

The US Navy's newest aircraft carrier, the USS Gerald R Ford, has been anchored in the Solent following her arrival on Monday morning.

The nuclear-powered ship, which is on her maiden deployment, is too big to enter Portsmouth Harbour at 337m long - considerably longer than Royal Navy flagship HMS Queen Elizabeth (280m).

Named after America's 38th president, the USS Gerald R Ford is the first new US aircraft carrier in more than 40 years and the first of the Ford Class, replacing the Nimitz Class on a one-for-one basis.
