Making Repairs At England's Most Remote Outpost

A 17-strong team of carpenters, bricklayers and electricians from 21 Engineer Regiment have been making repairs to buildings at an idyllic centre in the Lake District.

It usually hosts scout groups, school children, walkers, climbers and stargazers - but this week the engineers have moved in.

They've been tasked with creating an outbuilding to house a  generator and replacing the crumbling back wall of the accommodation block.

The Low Gillerthwaite Field Centre is set deep in the countryside of the Lake District on the shores of Ennerdale water and is adapted from 17th-century farm buildings.

21 Engineer Regiment will head to South Sudan early next year and are treating the Low Gillerthwaite deployment as practice for the upcoming mission.

With just a few days left to complete the work, they'll leave Low Gillerthwaite with a much-needed waterproof wall and a brand new outbuilding - as well as taking with them some useful training.
