Ukraine to Work Towards NATO Membership

Ukraine's parliament has voted to renounce the country's neutral status and work towards membership of the NATO alliance.

MPs overwhelmingly backed the move by 303 votes to eight in the nation's parliament.

In order to join the alliance, Ukraine would have to regain full control of its territory.

Some of its eastern regions are currently controlled by pro-Russian separatists, which the Kremlin denies it supports.

Russia called the step counterproductive and said it would increase tensions between the two countries.
