"Many of these have been false but I accept that in the past I have fallen below the high standards that we require of the Armed Forces that I have the honour to represent."
Sir Michael's decision to quit came just hours after the Prime Minister invited Westminster's party leader to crisis talks next week regarding plans for tackling sexual abuse and harassment.
Speaking today at Prime Minister's Questions, Mrs May expressed her deep concern, saying:
"We have a duty to ensure that everyone coming here to contribute to public life is treated with respect."
Sir Michael Fallon was not under investigation for the 2002 incident in which he repeatedly put his hand on a journalist's knee during a party conference dinner.
