A CV-22 Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft operated by the US Air Force has been undergoing flight deck training on HMS Queen Elizabeth, with the Royal Navy carrier posting some stunning images of the exercise.

The first image shows the Osprey hovering behind a British F-35B Lightning parked on the deck, while the second depicts the tilt-rotor aircraft coming in to land.

The images, which illustrate the degree of co-operation between the USAF and the Royal Navy, were posted on the social network site X by the crew of HMS Queen Elizabeth.

HMS Queen Elizabeth said in the post accompanying the images: "Welcome to the CV-22 Osprey! More flight deck training for various helicopters from Nato countries.

"What is your favourite military helicopter? #KingsFlagship #GlobalModernReady."

The $90m Osprey, which is powered by two Rolls-Royce T406 engines, can take off vertically, hover and land vertically like a helicopter.

But it is able to carry its payload faster and further than a comparable helicopter when the engines are tilted forward for horizontal flight.

HMS Queen Elizabeth set sail from Portsmouth Naval Base earlier this month to oversee a Carrier Strike Group in the Norwegian and North Seas. A Carrier Strike Group is a group of vessels that accompany aircraft carriers.

The British aircraft carrier is operating with Nato and the Joint Expeditionary Force (JEF), which involves countries like Latvia, Estonia and Iceland to keep the Baltic safe and stable.
