UK Commandos conduct long-range raid with US Navy Seals in South Korea

Members of Britain's Commando Force have conducted a long-range raiding exercise alongside US Navy Seals and US and South Korean marines.

Alpha Coy of 40 Commando took part in during Exercise Ssang Yong 24 – which also featured the US Marine Corps' MV-22B Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft.

Among the other units involved were members of 31st United States Marine Corps Expeditionary Unit, the Republic of Korea's Marine Corps Special Reconnaissance Battalion and US Navy Seals (Sea, Air and Land).

Training like this between international partners is instrumental in strengthening the defence of the Korean peninsula and regional security. 

The Commandos previously worked with Ospreys in Australia for Predator's Run 24, another multinational exercise involving the UK, US, Australia and the Philippines Armed Forces.

The Osprey, in various configurations, is operated by the US Navy and US Air Force as well as the Marine Corps.

Manufacturer Boeing points out how the multi-role combat aircraft uses its tilt-rotor technology to combine the vertical performance of a helicopter with the speed and range of a fixed-wing aircraft.

With its rotors in the vertical position, it can take off, land and hover like a helicopter.

And once the Osprey is airborne, it can convert to a turboprop aircraft capable of high-speed, high-altitude flight.
