Cup Exit: Royal Navy bow out of Hampshire Senior Cup after six-goal thriller against Portchester

Watch: The Royal Navy take on AFC Portchester in the Hampshire Senior Cup second round

The Royal Navy senior men's team produced a spirited display under the floodlights at the OnSite Group Stadium, ultimately falling to a 4-1 defeat against AFC Portchester in the second round of the Servio Hampshire Senior Cup.

Despite taking an early lead and pushing their high-flying opponents all the way into added time, the Senior Service were unable to force an equaliser in a pulsating, action-packed tie.

It marks the second year in a row that the Royal Navy have lost to AFC Portchester, who in 2025 bumped the military side out of the Portsmouth Senior Cup.

Dream start and first-half fightback

The Navy couldn't have asked for a better start. Just two minutes in, Craig Kingsman laid-off a crisp assist for skipper Dan Kerr to slot home the opening goal.

Portchester responded with the quality expected of a Step 4 outfit. The home side quickly grew into the contest, restoring parity through Charlie Williamson before Destiny Ojo completed the turnaround four minutes later to send the Navy into the break trailing 2-1.

Despite falling behind, the Navy remained dangerous on the counter-attack, forcing saves and threatening throughout a breathless opening 45 minutes.

Second-half drama

The Senior Service started the second half on the front foot, enjoying their strongest spell of possession. However, against the run of play, Portchester extended their lead on the hour mark when Lee Wort made it 3-1.

Refusing to back down, the Royal Navy showed relentless determinaton. In the 70th minute, Kingsman's long throw found Mark Drysdale, who expertly flicked a near-post header into the far corner to reduce the margine to 3-2 and set up a grandstand finish.

As the Navy pushed forward, goalkeeper Loz McCormick produced a stunning point-blank reaction save to keep his side within touching distance.

Moments later, brilliantly combined play on the right ring between Ben Aldous and David Osei carved open a golden chance to equalise, but the Navy were unable to apply the finishing touch.

The tie was finally settled in the 90th minute when an unfortunate close-range handball in the Navy box resulted in a penalty, which Connor Duffin converted to seal a 4-2 win for the hosts.

Portchester will now progress to the third round where they'll face AFC Totton.

'An encouraging performance'

Royal Navy head coach Lieutenant Commander Chris James praised his squad's application after coming together at short notice.

He said: "It is always disappointing to lose, but there is a great deal for us to be proud of against a talented Step 4 opposition. As manager, I could not fault the players' commitment, attitude or application.

"In the knowledge that we put a team together the night before with a single session, we still competed throughout and continued to pose a genuine threat for the full 90 minutes.

"At 3-2, we felt we could go on and get something out of the game. An added-time penalty gave the final scoreline a slightly flattering appearance for them, but nevertheless a deserved win for Portchester.

"We leave the competition disappointed by the result, but really encouraged by the performance and the character shown across the group."

Lt Cdr James also highlighted the valuable contributions of several squad newcomers who proved their ability to compete at this level.

The Royal Navy will now turn their attention to their next fixture against Baffins Milton Rovers in the Portsmouth Senior Cup in January as preparations continue towards the Inter Services Championship.
