Afghan Taliban Announce New Offensive

The Afghan Taliban have announced the start of their annual spring offensive.
The militant group said in a statement it would carry out large-scale attacks across the country.
The Taliban have called the campaign "Operation Omari" in honour of their founder, Mullah Mohammad Omar, whose death was acknowledged last year.
The government in Kabul is trying to bring the Islamist group to the negotiating table to end the conflict.
During a visit to Afghanistan last week, the US secretary of state, John Kerry, urged the Taliban to engage in direct talks with the government.
