"Army May Have To Carry Out Armed Police Patrols"

The Army may have to be deployed to carry out routine police patrols because of a shortage of firearms officers, according to the chairman of the Police Federation.

A survey of almost 17-thousand police officers found just one in five would be prepared to carry a weapon.

The Chairman of the Police Federation Steve White told Forces TV :

"We have a very proud tradition in this country of having an unarmed police service. It's not in the psyche of the British Public to constantly see police carrying guns... Most officers want to maintain that."
