Dame Helen Mirren: The Military Face Tough Choices Every Day

Dame Helen Mirren says her latest film Eye In The Sky has given her an insight into the ‘terribly difficult decisions people in the military have to make’.

Eye In The Sky features covert operators using drones disguised as birds and insects to bug a terrorist safe house. The painstaking operation to capture or kill suspected suicide bombers is threatened when a young girl unwittingly enters the kill zone.

The film focusses on what happens when the decision to strike is passed up a complex chain of command.

The Oscar winning actress plays a Colonel tasked with deciding whether a drone pilot should press the button.

Dame Helen said:
“We ask our people in the military to make these decisions. We look away while they’re making the decisions. Then we welcome them home as heroes, even give them medals maybe. But while they’re doing what they have to do, we prefer not to know about it.
“So I think the strength of the film is showing the audience the kinds of terribly, terribly difficult decisions people in the military have to make instantly. They have no time to reflect.”

Eye in the Sky is in cinemas this week.
