HMS Richmond Prepares To Tackle Med People Smugglers

Royal Navy warship HMS Richmond is preparing to deploy as part of a new European Union mission to tackle people smuggling in the Mediterranean.

It'll be one of nine warships taking part in the second phase of the naval mission, named 'Operation Sophia' after a baby born to a Somali mother who was rescued by EU ships.

The new operation is aiming to tackle the migrant crisis at its source, targeting the criminal gangs smuggling people on the highly-dangerous route from Libya to Europe.

HMS Richmond will help to identify, capture and destroy vessels before they're used by the traffickers.
