NATO Brand Royal Marines Intelligence Unit Best In The Business
Royal Marine specialists who intercept and exploit enemy communications have been singled out by NATO leaders as ‘outstanding’.
Small but elite, Y Squadron of 30 Commando Information Exploitation group were named the best unit across the 28 armed forces of the Atlantic Treaty organisation in their role of electronic warfare.
Major Robert Thorpe of Y Sqn received the prestigious NATO award at a ceremony held in Washington DC.
Y Squadron intercepts mobile, phone and radio transmissions of signals and provide that intelligence to their military partners.
This was demonstrated to some of NATO’s key members during the largest exercise of its kind, Listening Lion, staged at Okehampton Camp and on Dartmoor over two weeks in June 2014:
Y Sqn have been awarded the title ‘Outstanding Unit for Contribution to Electronic Warfare’.

Lieutenant Colonel Paul Lynch, Commanding Officer of 30 Commando, said: “I am immensely proud that Y Squadron have been given this award. It reflects on two years of intense tactical and technical innovation, which has helped ensure that the squadron remain a critical Information Surveillance and Reconnaissance asset to 30 Commando, and 3 Commando Brigade Royal Marines, and UK Defence as a whole.”
Major Hayward, Officer Commanding Y Squadron added: “This is a great honour from the preeminent Electronic Warfare organisation in the West in recognition for meritorious and distinctive sustained performance by a military unit in advancing or exemplifying the discipline of Electronic Warfare.”
