Solar eclipse: Military aircraft and parachutists take to the skies as darkness falls

Aircrews had an incredible view of one of nature's most spectacular events as they carried out routine flying duties.

The solar eclipse coincided with a scheduled Chinook training flight from RAF Odiham and RAF Benson.

Meanwhile over Falmouth Bay, the Royal Navy Parachute Display Team performed against the backdrop of the most stunning eclipse.

They joined two other aerial display teams as more than 95% of the sun was obscured by the moon in Cornwall.

The Royal Navy Raiders bring together experienced parachutists from across the Surface Fleet, the Submarine Service, the Royal Marines and the Fleet Air Arm.

The military display act trailed coloured smoke and flags, with a display of precision, skill and courage.

Also on the line-up was former RAF fast jet and solo Hawk display pilot Mark Linney, who flew in his Van's RV-8, a high-performance aerobatic aircraft with a fighter-like appearance.
