"UK and EU Sleepwalked into Ukraine Crisis"

Britain and the European Union have been accused of a "catastrophic misreading" of the mood in the Kremlin in the run-up to the crisis in Ukraine.

strongly critical report by the EU committee of the House of Lords says cuts at the Foreign Office meant there was a failure to recognise that Russia was starting to view Europe as a rival, and goes as far as to say that the European Union "sleepwalked" into the crisis.

A Foreign Office spokeswoman said no-one could have predicted the scale of the "unjustifiable and illegal" Russian intervention in Eastern Ukraine

Ukraine's military, meanwhile, says Russian tanks and misille launchers have crossed the border.

It's the latest escalation in the conflict since a ceasefire in the east of the country collapsed and Ukraine announced a withdrawal of troops from the key town of Debalseve.

Laura Hawkins reports.

Victoria Graham, meanwhile, spoke with the EU committee's chairman, Lord Tugendhat.
