HMS Heron Captain Hails 'Brilliant' Comeback

HMS Heron captain Mason Pointon has praised his team's performance after a 5-4 win over West Midlands Police in Birmingham.

Despite going behind twice as well as having a man sent off, the Navy team managed to pull off a win which Pointon called "brilliant to watch".

Pointon scored in both ends including a penalty which levelled the scores at 4-4.

He thinks the heart his team showed to come back is an attitude that comes from the forces.

He said: "That's about being in the military. That's looking after each other.

"We go 2-0 down - we weren't bothered.

"It was early doors and we’d made some silly mistakes. We go back out there, we go again.

"At 4-2 down at half-time, Rikki [manager] has got us in and said ‘lads, we know our weaknesses. We can't defend corners, stop giving corners away’.

"We've absolutely battered them in the second-half. We’ve blown them away.

"They had absolutely no chance. It was absolutely brilliant to watch."

Watch: West Midlands Police 4-5 HMS Heron.

Heron's first goal was a thunderbolt from range by Owen Aquilina which sparked their first comeback in the game.

"Going two goals behind, we’re just looking for something. A spark," said Pointon.

"When he gets the ball and strikes it, I think 'please, hit the net’ and when you see it ripple, I’m straight over to Rikki to say: 'I think we’ve got a chance here'."

The team's job was made more difficult when Nick Hill was sent off early in the second-half for violent conduct.

The HMS Heron skipper played down the incident calling it "handbags" but thinks the referee made the right decision.

He said: "The referee thinks he's seen something in there and given a red card which I'm happy with.

"I was surprised not to see two red cards but Chief Nick Hill is sad to be sent off in a game.

"He knows he should do better and he will do better in the future."
