RAF Aces upset British Army Blades to win Inter Services Ice Hockey title
The Royal Air Force Aces have won the 2024 Inter Services Ice Hockey Championships to fend off defending champions the British Army Blades with a 7-9 victory at Ice Sheffield.
This is the Ace's first Inter Services Ice Hockey win in four years and they went into the game knowing that they had to go up against the reigning champions from last year.
The Army was first to get onto the scoreboard with a goal by skipper Al Naylor, which was soon followed up with a goal by teammate Michael Hutchings.
The RAF needed to respond to the early Army success, and they did just that thanks to Alex Sampford who got the Aces off the mark.
The Air Force clawed their way back into the lead by 3-4 over the Army at the end of the first period
The Aces soared further ahead in the second period, extending their lead by 4-7 with Sampford getting a hattrick.
The Army was on the attack in the third and final period with Mark Morrison scoring to get them back on track.
But a disallowed goal sent the Army straight back onto thin ice and a cushion was handed to the RAF as the clock ran down to full time.
At the sound of the claxon, the RAF Aces win the Inter Services for the first time in four years to take the title away from the Army with a 7-9 victory.
