Royal Navy rugby star and Fiji international Local Acting Leading Hand Sam Matavesi has helped Premiership rugby union champions Northampton Saints into the quarter-finals of the Champions Cup.

Military forward Matavesi was a second-half substitute for Saints as they saw off two-time winners Munster 24 points to 14.

Saints will now face South African side the Bulls at Franklin's Gardens next weekend.

The Cornish-born Fijian is looking for more of the same in 2024 following a 2023 campaign that was filled with some memorable moments.

He racked up an impressive list of accolades in 2023, from playing a pivotal role in the Royal Navy's first Inter Services Championship win since 2016, through to starting for Fiji in their pre-World Cup win against England at Twickenham and reaching the Rugby World Cup quarter-finals for the first time in 16 years.

Matavesi also enjoyed a successful campaign with Northampton Saints where he helped his team reach the Champions Cup knockout stages and to the top of the Premiership Rugby table.

Elsewhere, Army back row players Sergeant Matt Dawson and Gunner Senitiki Nayolo went head-to-head in the Championship, where Nayolo's Coventry beat Dawson's Cambridge 64-12.
