Beefeaters and other members of the GMB union have suspended a strike over pension changes.

A number of employees who work at the Tower of London and other sites run by Historic Royal Palaces (HRP) were due to strike on Saturday 16 February and Thursday 21 February.

Strike action took place in December last year and on 6 February after HRP decided to move staff on a final salary pension model to what the GMB described as an “inferior” version.

However, the organisation has now made what the union calls an “improved” offer.

Union members will now be consulted on whether to accept the new deal.

Speaking to Forces News, Michael Ainsley, GMB Regional Officer said: “We have sat down with HRP and their new offer regarding our members’ pensions has improved significantly enough that we will consult with our members on whether or not they feel it is acceptable.

“We will meet with our members, who have said from the very beginning of this dispute that they are willing to listen to offers before going ahead with any strike action. The decision is now with them.”

HRP said they would not comment until the outcome of the union ballot was known.

Beefeaters have been employed to guard the Tower of London since the Tudor-era.

Famous for their iconic scarlet uniforms, to apply you must have served at least 22 years in the British Armed Forces.
