Oreshnik: Russia's 8,000mph hypersonic missile fired in latest strike on Ukraine

The Oreshnik - which means Hazel Tree - is an intermediate-range hypersonic ballistic missile capable of reaching speeds of more than 8,000 miles per hour

Russia has used an Oreshnik missile as part of an overnight barrage on Ukraine, killing four and injuring dozens others.

It marks the first time Russia has used the hypersonic missile – which carries multiple warheads that separate in mid-flight to strike multiple targets – since it was used to hit the central city of Dnipro in November 2024.

But while Russia has boasted that the Oreshnik is unstoppable, missile experts say the threat should not be overstated.

BFBS Forces News takes a closer look at the missile, with footage taken from Ukrainian social media capturing the moment its submunitions streaked towards the ground in the city of Lviv - situated 60km from the Polish border.
