Fighting Mosquitoes In Cyprus

With world health organisations on high alert over the Zika virus, the dangers of infections spread by mosquitoes have been highlighted once again.

Fortunately for British personnel based in Cyprus, the mosquito responsible has never been found there - but many other species are.

Anyone who has ever served at RAF Akrotiri, built 60 years ago beside a salt marsh that's an ideal breeding ground, will know just what a nuisance the insects can be.

To combat the problem a team of entomologists and pest controllers carry out a year-round control programme, much of which goes unseen.
