A road traffic accident involving a UK military vehicle close to the Swara training ground in Kenya has left a Kenyan national dead.

The British Army mobilised its emergency medical response to the incident.

British Army Training Unit Kenya (BATUK) said in a statement that it is continuing to work with the Kenyan National Police, who are currently investigating the accident.

BFBS Forces News understands that the incident took place whilst the serving person was on duty.

An MOD spokesperson said: "Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with his family, friends and loved ones at this extremely difficult time.

"The UK's Defence Serious Crime Command and the Royal Military Police are working closely with the relevant authorities as enquiries continue.

"It would be inappropriate to comment further at this stage."

BATUK, founded in 2008, administers and facilitates British Army access to the large numbers of training areas made available by the Kenyan authorities.

Roughly 400 soldiers are located at BATUK's main Nanyuki site, while there are more than 1,200 permanent staff, of which 79% are Kenyan, with more local staff hired for major training exercises.
