200 riflemen are currently deployed on Operation Shader in the country, training and mentoring its troops in the fight against extremist terror group IS.

They're based at Al Asad airbase, 100 miles west of Baghdad – an awfully long way away from the wives and husbands they've left here in Hampshire.

This was the Duchess' first visit to the battalion's home since a move from Bulford to Aldershot.

The first duty the Royal performed was the distribution of five long-service medals, and one for meritorious service.

Apart from meeting the families of soldiers currently overseas, the Duchess also left a posy of flowers at the 4 RIFLES memorial, which lists the names of riflemen who fell in Iraq and Afghanistan.
