Saxon Burial Site And WW1 Artefacts Found On Salisbury Plain
Secrets of an ancient past and military artefacts from World War 1 and 2 have been discovered during pre-development work for new military quarters in Bulford on Salisbury Plain.
The Saxon cemetery of about 150 graves and military features has been discovered on land owned by the MoD and allocated for 227 new homes for Army families.
The archaeological features were first found during standard pre-planning trenching by a specialist team from Wessex Archaeology.
One of the burials has been carbon dated to between the 6th and 7th century.
During WW1 the site was used for training. The researchers have found evidence that a field farrier may have re-shoed horses at the site.
The site was also home to WW2 firing ranges.
