First Gulf War memorial honouring coalition nations nears completion in UK

First Gulf War memorial takes shape at UK foundry

A new Desert Shield and Desert Storm memorial is being created to commemorate the global coalition that came together to liberate Kuwait – with the centrepiece being made in the UK.

As soon as the Unity Shield is complete, it will be shipped to Washington DC where it will be the focus of a more extensive memorial.

So what does it actually commemorate? In 1990, Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait. The response was a coalition of 42 countries, led by the United States, which by 16 January 1991 had ejected Saddam's forces.
