Kosovo War: Remembering 25 years since peace was established by Nato in 1999

A service of remembrance marking a quarter century since the end of the Kosovo War was held at the National Memorial Arboretum.

Conducted by the Royal British Legion, the 25th anniversary event reflected on the end of hostilities in the country which led to the creation of Nato's peacekeeping Kosovo Force (KFOR).

"This year, 25 years on, we are remembering the extraordinary contribution of the thousands of Armed Forces personnel who were deployed to Kosovo as part of Nato's international peacekeeping mission," said Doctor Tara Knights, head of remembrance at the Royal British Legion.

Dr Knights said: "We also remember the service and sacrifice of those who gave their lives or suffered injuries and thank those who continue to support peace and stability in Kosovo to this day.

"The RBL's Service of Remembrance at the National Memorial Arboretum will recognise and honour the service of our Armed Forces, and we encourage people to take a moment to reflect and remember together.

"The RBL remains committed to ensuring that more recent conflicts and operations are recognised and that all generations of the Armed Forces community know the RBL is here to support them, for life."

At noon on Sunday, the Royal British Legion held their service in Staffordshire.

During the ceremony, veterans from the Armed Forces read their testimonies about their time in Kosovo.

Each one reflected on their various roles and experiences over the years.

To ensure peace continued, thousands of British troops deployed in the country to preserve order, and their mission is ongoing to this day.

Chief of the Defence Staff Admiral Sir Tony Radakin said: "Since more than 10,000 British troops first entered Kosovo 25 years ago as the largest contingent within Nato's peacekeeping force, the UK has closely supported Kosovo's sovereignty – including as one of the first countries to recognise Kosovan independence.

"We especially remember the sacrifice of those who gave their lives or suffered injuries and thank all the members of our Armed Forces who served as part of UK and Nato operations in Kosovo, as well as our troops who continue to support Kosovo's sovereignty through Nato's KFOR mission.

"Thank you."
