Air Cadets Celebrate RAF 100 With Athletics Competition In Belfast

Twenty-five cadet athletics teams from across Northern Ireland have come together to celebrate RAF 100.

Two hundred and fifty cadets took part in ten different events at the Mary Peters Track in Belfast.

The air cadets hold an athletics event annually at the venue, but this year it has been expanded to include all cadet orgranisations in Northern Ireland to mark the RAF's centenary.

"Some of the cadets are coming down probably never having done a lot of serious sport before," says Wing Commander Michael Miskimmin, Officer Commanding Northern Ireland Air Cadets.

"It lets them come down to see they don't need to be an Olympic champion to partake."

The Olympian who the Mary Peters Track was named after was in attendance during the event and started a mini relay for the RAF 100 baton.

"It's about learning to be sociable, it's about learning to be part of a team, it's about having pride in your own ability," she said.

"You never know how good you can be if you don't try something."
