An Army bomb disposal unit was called to Southsea Common in Portsmouth after reports of a firework exploding in a bin.

Officers put a 100m cordon in place as they dealt with the incident, which happened yesterday afternoon.

A bomb disposal robot was deployed to investigate the bin after the blast, believed to be caused by a disused 'rocket-style' firework.

A spokesperson from the Hampshire force said:

"We’re working to establish the cause of the explosion. One of our lines of inquiry is that it could have been a firework.

"Our priority is ensuring the area is safe for members of the public and we will get things back to normal as soon as possible."
