Blackman "Deeply Regrets" Killing Taliban Fighter Says Wife

Former Royal Marine Sergeant Alexander Blackman "deeply regrets" killing a Taliban fighter while serving in Afghanistan, his wife has told Forces News.

Claire Blackman has been speaking about her hopes once he leaves prison.

She said: "There are so many lessons to learn from this."

She then said going forward, steps must be taken to ensure "the safety, security and support for our troops, while we are asking them to do difficult work in impossible circumstances".

"That has to be rectified."

Mrs Blackman also confirmed that the moment the Taliban fighter was killed had been discussed between them.

"He's never been proud of that moment. Never."

"He deeply regrets it. He would reverse the clock and undo it if he ever possibly could."

Blackman was originally given a murder conviction in November 2013 for the killing of an injured Taliban fighter in Afghanistan, but on Tuesday that was reduced to manslaughter, meaning he could be home within weeks.

He has already spent almost three-and-a-half years in prison.

Claire Blackman spoke to Forces News, and you can watch the interview above.
