Charities Honour Vera Lynn Ahead Of Her 100th Birthday

The Forces Sweetheart Dame Vera Lynn is about to celebrate her 100th birthday.

Her charities are honouring Dame Vera by looking at how she’s supported ex-servicemen, and many others over the years.

Dame Vera Lynn has been close to the hearts of the military since the second world war.

She often referred to British troops as ‘her boys’, a relationship which has created the backbone for most of her charity work.

‘Help for Forgotten Allies’, one of her main charities gives grants to the widows of Burmese soldiers who fought in the Burma campaign during the Second World War.

Vera Lynn spent several weeks entertaining the troops in the country now known as Burma.

The Forces sweetheart has also helped good causes in the UK. In 2001, she launched the Dame Vera Lynn Charity.

Sixteen years on and they’ve provided help to over 600 families

They include five-year-old India. She, along with her family, have been attending the charity’s centre for over two years.

Although Dame Vera can’t visit often anymore, the charities she helps think hers is a very special centenary.
